Child & Youth Care Practitioner

"Know that deep inside, you are resilient, brave and so much stronger and powerful than your fears."

Hello! My name is Celeste Seegulam and I am a Child and Youth Care Worker. I graduated from Sheridan College with an Advanced Diploma in CYC. I entered the field because I believe my life purpose is to work with children and youth and support them in tackling life's struggles. Growing up is hard, and what I have discovered through experiences in placements and working in child care is the tremendous impact one caring supportive adult has on a young person's life. A CYC offers the stability some children and youth may need in their lives. A CYC provides guidance, supports the child and helps them discover tools to help them tackle life's struggles and guide them on the path of discovering the resilient "superhero" versions of themselves. I have been fortunate enough to turn my passion into a reality and my favourite part of being a CYC is guiding the children and youth I work with in discovering their passion, their purpose in life and making it into a reality, like I have with Resiliency and ME. In College, my Advance Trauma and Abuse professor once told me that "Talk Therapy is ineffective in counselling children and youth". It has now become a philosophy that I integrate when working in the field. In my experience, many counsellors have taken the approach of using the traditional way of counselling, i.e sitting in an office and talking 1 on 1 with a counsellor. In Resiliency and ME, what makes us unique is that we explore a variety of avenues with the children and youth in our centre. We build a positive, genuine relationship with the child, we adhere their interests and integrate them into our counselling and strategy building, using a variety of avenues...Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Sports Therapy and my personal favourite, Play Therapy. We have found that this is the most effective way to engage the children and youth we work with in developing strategies and tools they can integrate into their lives and become more resilient.

"I survived because the fire inside of me burned brighter than the  fire around me"

Hello! My name is Nikita Seegulam. I am a Child and Youth Care Working with an ongoing 4 years in the field. We have incorporated my art background and our child and youth care education to create a program that integrates the benefits of both fields. We have designed a therapeutic space for children to explore their creativity, enhance their social development, increase their imagination in a safe space to talk about life's challenges and how to implement their new skill sets to be successful in everyday life. I truly enjoy working with children and youth and being apart of their journey to discovering their inner resiliency. I find it extremely rewarding. I believe resiliency is in everyone, but sometimes we need helping finding that within ourselves. I have worked with a diverse number of children from all walks of life and who have a wide range of exceptionalities. I believe it is important for children to learn and ask questions. What brought me to this field was my own experiences and challenges I faced as a youth. Having a mentor, someone you trust and having a safe space where you can talk to someone without judgement or response was extremely beneficial. I never forgot that as a child and now as an adult, I want to utilize my experiences and knowledge to pay it forward and hopefully make a positive impact in the lives of all the children and youth I encounter in my field.

Please feel free to contact me for more information on our programs or with any questions you may have.

"Throw me to the wolves and I will return leading the pack"

Hi, I'm Zach and I am graduate from Sheridan College Child and Youth Care program, alongside my fellow Child and Youth Counsellors at Resiliency & Me. I have 15 years of child care/mentoring experience starting from working in a home day-care since the age of 12 to being an assistant coach a Cheerleading gym working with children and youth with various expcentalities. I chose this field because at a young age I have noticed that there were not many males working in the Child Counselling Field. I am hoping to change that stigma for all children and youth by providing support, compassion, integrityin my work and above all else a SAFE space they can always go to when they are in need of support...
